Letter from Carrie Smedira to Project Manager of MOCo's Public-Private Projects Initiative to Develop Soccer Fields

Montgomery County Government, MD

Dear Kassa,

I have been following the Brickyard Road decision and wanted to ask you as the Project Manager for Public-Private Projects Initiative to Develop Soccer Fields why isn't Cabin John Regional Park on the list of potential sites for new soccer fields? Private-public partnerships have worked with the horse stables in Wheaton Regional Park, the boat concessions in Lake Needwood Park, and the golf driving range in South Germantown Park.

Cabin John Regional Park is 525 acres and only has 6 baseball fields. Page 8 of the 2005 Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission PROS plan reads under "Natural Resource Acreage - If the county does not have enough locally owned recreational lands to meet its’ overall 30 acres per thousand goal, it may apply a portion of locally owned natural resource lands. This includes 1/3 of Stream Valley, Conservation and undeveloped portions of Regional Parks." Doesn't this mean Cabin John & Wheaton Regional Park?

The 2010 U.S. Census Bureau reported Wheaton as 40% Hispanic, which is the demographic who plays soccer the most. Wheaton Regional Park is 536 acres big. Seems like a lot of potential soccer fields to me.

The benefit of developing the regional parks is Parks maintenance crews & buildings are already on-site and there are hundreds of undeveloped acres available. Much more than the 20 acres under debate at Brickyard Road.

Looking forward to your reply,
Carrie Smedira
